Triangle SURJ shares the heartbreak with Akiel Denkins’ family and community. We share, too, our outrage at another killing of a young Black man at the hands of police. We are bone tired of a police culture that prioritizes an arrest over a life. We are bone tired of being told that we should be more afraid of young Black men than of those who kill young Black men in the name of our so-called safety.
We do not accept any excuse for the relentless killing of Black people by the police. No arrest is more important than a life. When will the police – when will all of us – understand that none of us can afford to lose one more Black life? We stand with Akiel’s family and the Raleigh community in a call for accountability. Black Lives Matter.
